Description
Situated in the Marche region, in the province of Ancona, Portonovo Bay is one among the most popular tourist destinations in the Adriatic Sea, well-equipped and organized from all points of view.
Many local associations offer any kind of information and amusement for the numerous tourists enjoying their holidays in this region.
The natural bay is protected by a northern 1-km-long cliff, 700 metres of which are emerged while the others are under the sea level. This long rocky wall is called "I travi" and marks the northern side of the gulf.
On the South, on the contrary, there's a large beach overlooked by the so-called "Torre di guarda", an ancient tower built in 1716 to fight pirades' incursions.
Over the years, the tower has been used as a spiritual retreat place by many poets and artists, such as Gabriele D'Annunzio, who wrote and set his "L'acqua tace" novel precisely in Portonovo.
The beach also has a 25-metre jetty perpendicular to the coast where boats can't, however, dock, except in case of emergency. Boats can drop the anchor along "I Travi" cliff, sheltered from all north-west winds. They can drop the anchor at least 50 m off the coast along the whloe area close to the cliff and for about 200 m on the side of Portonovo village.
The anchorage has a muddy and pebbly sea bottom, not very deep but regular enough. Harships are exclusively represented by north and north-east winds.
Two flashing yelloy buoys signal some submerged artificial barriers in the anchorage. Be careful to some rocks in a no-signaled area where sea bottom is very low.
The pebbly beach is equipped with beach resorts, restaurants, bars, shops and toilets. The Conero Riviera is famous all around the world for its wild landscapes and crystal-blue sea.
In the Regional Conero Park, visitors can enjoy any kind of beach and sports activites. The equipped city of Ancona and its port are just few km away.
You can contact the harbour on VHF channel 16 or send an e-mail to: ancona@guardiacostiera.it.
